‘Redhat hits 1B in revenue’, ‘Linux Goes Automotive’ and ‘Android leaps over iPhone’ are just a few of the noteworthy Linux based accomplishments of 2012.
‘What A Year in Linux’ is certainly an appropriate title for the preceding video. Truly though, it just barely sums up the supremacy to which the OS is reaching, and the world wide recognition Linux has gained month-by-month in this year, 2012.
Truly, there are many more accomplishments within the Linux community, far more than can be summed up in even under an hour. From the vast number of Ubuntu deployments around the globe, to the growing list of Linux distributions such as Linux Mint reaching record breaking numbers. 2012 has certainly been a wonderful year for Linux.
‘Redhat hits 1B in revenue’And Beyond In 2012
In November of 2010, Forbes made a forecast that, “Red Hat will likely reach $1 billion in annual revenue in 2011″. In March of 2012 though, Red Hat reported that it had crossed the billion-dollar mark in revenue, with $1.13 billion in the fiscal year that ended February 29, 2012. As Linux Foundation Executive Director, Jim Zemlin put it, “This achievement will finally put to bed the argument that ‘nobody can make money with open source.”
‘Linux Goes Automotive’ – Coming Soon To A Car Near You
Around September, the Linux Foundation launched an “Automotive Grade” Linux workgroup in to which a growing number of auto makers have come together to support Linux and open source software for use in automobiles. Toyota, the worlds largest auto maker, along with Jaguar and Nissan are just a few of the big name auto makers committed to the endeavor. Along with them are Intel (chip manufacturers), Samsung (mobile market leaders), Nvidia (graphics display makers) and many others. We recently reported on Automotive Grade Linux
and you can surely expect to see more from this powerful conglomerate and their future implementations of Linux in automobiles in 2013 and beyond. For more on what’s happening in the area of Automotive Grade Linux , click there.
‘Android leaps over iPhone’ in Popularity
Last, but certainly not least, is Android. Does it really need any introduction? Well, actually, yes it does. Because Android is by far the mos popular Linux distribution ever created, and hundreds of millions of people all over the world still have little idea at the moment they’re actually using Linux on their mobile devices.
The latest report by IDC states that they forecast “Android to be the clear leader in the smart-phone mobile operating system race, thanks in large part to a broad selection of devices from a wide range of partners. Samsung is the leading Android smart-phone seller though resurgent smart-phone vendors LG Electronics and Sony, both of which cracked the top five smart-phone vendors during 3Q12, are not to be overlooked. IDC believes the net result of this will be continued double-digit growth throughout the forecast period. iOS will maintain its position as the clear number two platform behind Android at the end of 2012 and throughout the forecast”
End of story, at least for 2012.
So yes, it has been an wonderful 2012 for Linux and we forecast that 2013 should be no less an amazing year for the Linux community as a whole.
